The Blueair Blue Pure 411 also shows as unavailable. The Honeywell Air Genius HFD360 from the old runner-up spot is still sold at $249.00.
Old Claims Worth a Second Look
The older page called the Hamilton Beach a permanent HEPA filter. Its Amazon title says a reusable 99 percent HEPA grade filter to 3 microns, which is not the same as true HEPA, rated 99.97 percent at 0.3 microns. The older page also said the Winix 5500-2 releases ozone while praising its PlasmaWave setting. Keep any plasma or ion setting off. Ozone is a lung irritant, and California caps it at 0.050 parts per million for indoor purifiers.

The risk to watch is moisture. A pre-filter that goes back in damp can grow mold, and a rinsed HEPA sheet can tear or clog for good. Expect more listings to print the word washable in large type next to a small note about which part it covers. Read the filter list, not the headline, and add the yearly price of the non-washable parts to the true cost.
How to Wash a Pre-Filter
- Power off and unplug before you open the housing.
- Vacuum first with a brush head. Rinse in lukewarm water only if the manual says to.
- Dry fully for at least a day. A damp filter in a warm unit can grow mold.
