Window ACs for Small Spaces
A window unit puts the hot parts outside and cools the room from the window. It costs the least per BTU and is the simplest to install. A 5,000 or 6,000 BTU unit suits a bedroom, a dorm or an office. For the full range, see the best window air conditioners.
5,000 or 6,000 BTU?
Five thousand BTU covers about 150 square feet. Six thousand covers about 250. A little extra helps in a sunny room. Too much is wasteful. Check your room with the BTU calculator. We also have dedicated lists of 5,000 BTU air conditioners and 6,000 BTU air conditioners.
Check the Window First
Small units fit double-hung windows within a width and height range. The GE 6,000 BTU listing gives 21.875 to 36 inches wide. The Midea gives 23 to 36 inches wide and 14 inches high. Measure first. A casement window needs a different unit.
Here is where small window ACs are going: more U-shaped inverters, more Wi-Fi and more look-alikes. Midea’s 6,000 BTU U-shape costs $314.99, while a plain GE 6,000 BTU costs $179.99. Features keep climbing and the plain box is holding its price. That is rare in appliances.

The Midea U 6,000 BTU sits sideways in the window so the window can still open. The listing says it saves more than 37 percent energy, has Wi-Fi and works with Alexa and Google. It costs $314.99, with a 4.4 rating from 279 ratings.
The downside is the old-model problem. Four of the seven models on the old list, like the Danby DAC050 and the hOmeLabs AC-188, no longer match current listings. Brands rename, drop and rebuild lines every couple of years, and old review pages keep ranking after the unit is gone. Expect more dead links. Buy by size and specs, not by a model number from a 2022 list.
Low Profile Matters
A short unit blocks less of the window. Heights vary, so read the listing. Our guide to low profile window air conditioners covers the shortest ones.
Noise and Sleep
The Frigidaire 6,000 BTU lists 52 dBA, and the Midea 6,000 BTU lists 52 dB on low. That is about the level of a quiet office. Use low fan speeds at night. A U-shaped inverter is quieter still, since the window blocks outside noise.
Running Cost
A 6,000 BTU unit draws roughly 500 to 600 watts. At 15 cents a kilowatt hour, that is under 9 cents an hour, or about $20 for a month of eight-hour days.
How to Pick
Best value? The GE. Quiet with a remote? The Midea or the Frigidaire 6,000 BTU. Tiny room on a budget? The Frigidaire or Midea 5,000 BTU. Open window and an app? The Midea U.
