Heat at home may dry the filter, and it may also melt plastic frames or glue and release fumes. Sunlight can warm and dry a filter, but it will not empty the pores. Treat these as ways to dry a damp filter, not to restore it.
What You Can Do to Make It Last
- Keep the pre-filter clean. Vacuum it monthly so dust does not coat the carbon.
- Fix the source. Cooking fumes, gas leaks, new paint and smoke fill carbon quickly. Ventilate and use the range hood.
- Do not run it wet. Keep it away from humid spots, and do not use it right after a steam shower.
- Use a fan speed that fits. A unit that runs on high all day uses up the carbon sooner.
- Write the date on the filter, or set a phone reminder.
The risk to watch is DIY revival tricks. Videos show people washing carbon filters, baking them in an oven or leaving them in the sun, and many of these tips are passed along without a test. A wet or damaged carbon filter can catch less, and a filter that no longer works can let gases pass while you think the air is being cleaned.
How Often to Replace It
