PlasmaWave: leave it on or switch it off?
PlasmaWave releases positive and negative ions that Winix says break down odors and germs. The company says the unit passes California’s CARB rules on ozone, which cap how much ozone an air cleaner can make.
Still, plenty of people prefer pure filtration. The EPA says ionizers can create ozone and fine particles, and that ozone is a lung irritant. That is a fair reason to switch it off in a bedroom, around kids, or for anyone with asthma. The filters do the heavy lifting either way. Leave it on only if you want the extra odor help and are comfortable with the trade-off.
How it handles real rooms
A 360 sq ft rating covers most bedrooms and mid-size living rooms. In a 200 sq ft room, the C545 completes about 8.7 air changes an hour (232 x 60 / 1,600 cubic feet). In an open-plan 600 sq ft space, it will struggle. Add a second unit or move up.
Noise is decent in sleep mode, and auto mode keeps the fan low until the sensor sees more dust. For cooking smells, open the windows too. A carbon filter helps, but it is not magic.
What PlasmaWave claims, and what to make of it
Winix says PlasmaWave creates hydroxyl radicals that react with odors, bacteria and gases. Those claims come from the maker’s own testing. Independent evidence for ionizers in real homes is mixed, and the EPA warns that some ionizers can create ozone and tiny particles. The fair take: filters are proven, PlasmaWave is optional. Treat it as a bonus, not the reason to buy.
If odors are the problem, fix the source first: take the trash out, run the range hood and open a window. The carbon filter helps. PlasmaWave might help a little more. Neither replaces fresh air.

Plan for a new True HEPA filter roughly once a year, with the carbon filter swapped as the indicator says. Expect filter reminders to keep moving into apps, which is convenient until a filter ships late or an app update breaks the alert. Check the current price of genuine Winix filters before buying, since third-party filters may not match the tested spec. Running costs are modest at a few dollars a month in electricity.
Where is this going? Ionizer switches like this one are likely to become standard, because regulators and buyers are both getting wary of ozone. Expect more units to ship with the ionizer off by default, which lets a brand sell to both camps, and expect the first ozone-related recalls or fines to hit the loudest marketing claims. The downside to watch: more app-locked features. A purifier should work with a button, even if the phone is dead.

It lets you set schedules, change modes and get filter alerts from a phone. Handy if the purifier sits in a room you do not visit often. Not essential if you run it on auto. Make sure the unit keeps working with its own buttons if the app or Wi-Fi goes away.
