Wildfire Smoke Day With Pets: 9 Moves That Work (and 3 Purifiers to Run)

The sky is orange. The dog still wants a walk. The cat sits on the one windowsill that leaks. Wildfire smoke turns an ordinary day into a plan, and pets do not read air quality alerts.

Here is the short version. Shut the windows, run a purifier in the room where your pet sleeps, keep outdoor trips short, and watch the numbers with a cheap PM2.5 monitor. The Winix 5510 is the easy purifier to start with. The Coway Airmega 400 covers a bigger space. The Levoit Vital 200S-P is the one built around pet-hair upkeep.

This is a how-to for the smoke day itself. For full buying lists, see our best air purifiers for wildfire smoke and air purifiers for pets. Prices below were checked on Amazon in October 2026.

9 moves for a smoke day with pets

  1. Check the air first. Look up your local AQI before you head out. When it is high, keep potty trips short and skip the long walk. Play indoors instead.
  2. Close windows and doors. Smoke sneaks in through gaps. Shut the pet door too, if you have one, and tape a towel along a leaky sill.
  3. Pick one clean room. Choose the room where your pet spends the most time. Close the door and run the purifier there on a high setting.
  4. Run the HVAC fan, with a good filter. If your system has a recirculate setting, use it. A MERV 13 filter catches more smoke particles, but check that your system can handle it first. See our MERV 13 furnace filter picks.
  5. Skip candles, sprays and incense. They add more particles and fumes to air that is already poor. Never use an ozone generator around pets. Here is why: the ozone problem with some purifiers.
  6. Wipe paws and fur when they come in. Smoke particles ride in on coats. A damp cloth beats carrying them to the couch.
  7. Wash bedding. Smoke smell sticks to fabric. Washing pet beds and blankets after a smoke day helps the room smell better and cuts the dust.
  8. Go easy on the litter box and the vacuum. Low-dust litter helps. If you vacuum, use a vacuum with a sealed HEPA filter, or wait until the air clears. See what pet dander is and how to cut it.
  9. Watch for trouble. Coughing, wheezing, watery eyes or tired behavior mean it is time to call the vet. Birds are the most sensitive pets. If a bird breathes hard, call an avian vet right away.

1. Winix 5510: the easy place to start

Winix 5510

Winix 5510 air purifier

Winix lists a smoke CADR of 253 cfm, a washable pre-filter that catches fur before it reaches the main filter, True HEPA, and a carbon filter. That mix suits a home with both shedding and smoke days. Amazon shoppers rate it 4.6 out of 5.

It also has an optional PlasmaWave feature. For smoke, lean on the filters, and turn PlasmaWave off with its button if you want pure filtration. Learn the controls before the next smoke event, not during it.

Pick it for the main room where your pet spends the day. Skip it if you need to clean a space larger than a big living room. Check the size with the CADR calculator.

2. Coway Airmega 400: for a larger space

Coway Airmega 400

Coway Airmega 400 air purifier

Coway lists a smoke CADR of 328 cfm, washable pre-filters, and a Max2 filter set that combines carbon and HEPA. That is more airflow for an open living area or a pet room with high ceilings. Amazon shoppers rate it 4.6 out of 5.

The price is the catch at $629.99, and replacement filter sets add to the yearly cost. See when to change purifier filters before you commit.

Pick it for a big room. Skip it if one bedroom is all you need to protect. The money is better spent on the Winix then.

3. Levoit Vital 200S-P: built for pet owners

Levoit Vital 200S-P

Levoit Vital 200S-P air purifier

The 200S-P is Levoit’s pet-focused version of the Vital line. It lists coverage up to 1,875 square feet in an hour, and Amazon shoppers rate it 4.7 out of 5. It is also the cheapest of the three at $169.99.

The pet design is about upkeep, such as an easier pre-filter for hair. Levoit does not list a separate smoke CADR on the page that was checked, so use it for smoke only in a room sized well below its one-hour number.

Pick it for a pet-heavy home where hair is the daily battle. Skip it if smoke is the main reason you are buying. The Winix lists the smoke number.

Add a monitor so you know it is working

GoveeLife Smart Air Quality Monitor H5106

GoveeLife Smart Air Quality Monitor H5106

A purifier tells you nothing. A PM2.5 monitor does. The GoveeLife H5106 shows fine-particle levels on its display and costs $39.98. Put it in the pet’s room. If the number stays low with the door shut, the setup is working.

It is a cheap guide, not a lab tool. For more, see our indoor air quality monitor picks.

How to size the purifier

Use the air-change number, not the biggest coverage claim. A purifier that cleans a room once an hour is a lazy job. Four to five times an hour is what you want on a smoke day. Run your room through the air purifier size guide first. A closed door and a smaller room make any purifier work harder for you.

Questions about whether a purifier helps with smoke at all? Our answer is in does an air purifier help with smoke and best air purifiers for smoke.

Quick answers

Is wildfire smoke bad for dogs and cats?

It can irritate eyes, noses and lungs, just like in people. Older pets and pets with breathing problems need the most care. Ask your vet for advice about your own pet.

Should the purifier run all day?

On a smoke day, yes. Run it on a high setting in the pet’s room with the door closed, then turn it down when the air clears.

Can a purifier handle both pet hair and smoke?

It can catch some airborne hair and smoke particles. It will not clean the hair already on your rug. You still need a vacuum for that.
