AC Tonnage Calculator

Find out how many tons of central air conditioning capacity your whole house needs, based on total square footage, number of stories, climate zone, and insulation quality — the same rough-sizing variables an HVAC contractor uses before recommending a 2-ton, 3-ton, or 4-ton system for your home.

Formula: base sizing uses square feet per ton of central air capacity for your selected climate zone (450 for hot & humid, 550 for hot & dry, 650 for mixed, 750 for cold — common industry rules of thumb), adjusted ±15% for insulation quality, and scaled for Ceiling Height ÷ 8. This is a rough ballpark, not a substitute for a licensed HVAC contractor's Manual J load calculation, which accounts for window placement, orientation, and duct design.
