Well Water vs. Municipal Water: Why Your Source Changes the Math

The state-level estimate in this guide is built from groundwater (well) monitoring data, and that choice matters for how you read your result:

  • Private wells draw directly from the local aquifer with no treatment or blending, so they track the regional geology closely — if your state or county sits on carbonate rock, your well almost certainly will too, often at the harder end of the range.
  • Municipal water is frequently blended from multiple sources, partially softened at the treatment plant, or drawn from a reservoir rather than groundwater, so city tap hardness can run noticeably softer than the surrounding region’s raw groundwater number — sometimes by a lot.

Why Your State’s Number Won’t Match Your Tap Exactly

The same honest caveat applies here as it does across every sizing guide on this site: a single published number is built on assumptions that your specific situation may not share. A manufacturer’s coverage claim assumes a baseline test condition; this guide’s state number assumes your water comes from the same general aquifer system as every other monitored well in that state. Neither assumption holds perfectly at any one address.

Three things specifically widen the gap between the state number and your actual tap:

  • Aquifer variation within a state. Colorado’s statewide typical range runs from about 150 to nearly 2,000 mg/L depending on whether a well draws from a mountain snowmelt aquifer or a mineral-rich basin aquifer — both are “Colorado,” and they’re worlds apart. Look at the typical range shown in the calculator, not just the median, for exactly this reason.
  • Treatment and blending. Municipal utilities frequently blend multiple source waters or run partial softening at the treatment plant, so city tap hardness is often lower than the raw regional groundwater figure this guide is built from.
  • Sample size. Some states have thousands of monitored wells behind their number; others (shown transparently in the calculator) have as few as a dozen. A thinner sample is still real data, but it’s a less confident estimate of the state as a whole.

None of this makes the state estimate useless — it’s still a real, sourced number that tells you whether to expect a softener conversation at all, and roughly how big that conversation should be. It just isn’t a substitute for testing your actual water once you’re ready to buy equipment.

  • Soft to Moderately Hard (under 120 mg/L / 7 GPG): most households won’t notice major scale buildup or soap-scum issues; a softener is optional rather than necessary unless you have specific concerns like spotting on glassware.

There’s no single published dataset covering every municipal utility’s treated tap hardness nationwide, but there is consistent, comparable USGS groundwater monitoring data across all 50 states. Groundwater hardness also reflects the underlying regional geology most directly, which is what most readers actually want to know. If you’re on municipal water, treat this number as a rough ceiling rather than a prediction, since treatment often softens tap water somewhat from the raw regional figure.

What’s the difference between mg/L and grains per gallon?

They’re both measurements of the same thing — dissolved calcium and magnesium — expressed in different units. 1 grain per gallon (GPG) equals 17.1 mg/L. Water quality reports and lab tests typically use mg/L; water softener sizing and packaging typically use GPG.
