A hospital-style brick versus a gadget from the future. The AirDoctor cleans a lot more air. The Dyson looks great, doubles as a fan and costs half as much. Which one wins depends on the room. Here is the breakdown.

AirDoctor 5500 vs Dyson TP09 at a Glance
The AirDoctor AD5500 is $999.00 on Amazon. The Dyson TP09 is $499.99. The AirDoctor is a 33-pound floor tower with a rated CADR of 560 on the older page. The Dyson is 10.7 pounds, 41 inches tall, and doubles as a fan. The AirDoctor moves far more air. The Dyson has a nicer design and an app.
What Changed Since the Older Page
The older page listed the AD5500 at 868 square feet five times an hour. Today it is listed at 4,172 square feet an hour. The TP09 is still sold, with a 4.1 rating from 418 ratings, but newer Dyson models are on the market. Prices were checked on October 19, 2026. The claim that the AirDoctor filter removes the COVID virus was dropped, since a filter traps particles and does not kill anything.
Design and Size
The AirDoctor is a plain white perforated tower with handles and casters. Leave at least six inches around it so it can pull air in. The Dyson is a tall, slim oval ring on a cylinder base with a remote and an LCD. It weighs about a third as much and fits easily in a corner. It looks like a fan because it is one.
Airflow, Noise and Room Size
- AirDoctor: about 868 square feet at five air changes an hour, 6 fan speeds, 30 to 50 dB, 10 to 100 watts.
- Dyson TP09: about 344 square feet at five air changes an hour on the older page, 10 fan speeds, up to about 50 dB. Dyson gave no CADR figure on the old page.
The AirDoctor cleans a room about two and a half times bigger at the same rate. Read what CADR means for why that matters.
Looking ahead, fan-and-purifier combos will keep climbing. People want one machine instead of two, and Dyson sells that idea better than anyone. The catch is that a tower fan has to move air fast to feel like a fan, and that is not the same as cleaning air fast.

Price on Amazon: $999.00 | 4.3 stars from 81 ratings (checked October 19, 2026)
The AirDoctor AD5500 is listed for whole-home and extra-large rooms. The listing says it cleans 1,043 square feet in 15 minutes and up to 4,172 square feet in an hour, with UltraHEPA filtration rated at 99.99 percent of particles at 0.003 microns. It has a 4.3 rating from 81 ratings.

The Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 is both a purifier and a tower fan. The listing says it senses and captures pollutants, uses a 360-degree sealed HEPA system that captures 99.97 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, and detects and destroys formaldehyde. It has a 4.1 rating from over 400 ratings.
Price on Amazon: $179.99 | 4.6 stars from 32,461 ratings (checked October 19, 2026)
The Winix 5510 is the lower-cost bridge. The listing shows true HEPA, a carbon filter, app support and an AHAM Verifide rating at 392 square feet. It has a 4.6 rating from over 32,000 ratings.
The risk to watch is the formaldehyde claim. The listing says the TP09 detects and destroys formaldehyde, but the filter that does it wears out, and the wording says nothing about how much a normal room needs. Expect more brands to put gas-fighting words on the box. Ask how long the filter lasts and what it costs to replace.
How the Filtering Works
The AirDoctor sends air through a permanent pre-filter, a carbon and VOC filter and an UltraHEPA filter, on both sides of the unit. The Dyson uses a sealed 360-degree system with a HEPA filter and a carbon layer, and a catalytic layer for formaldehyde. Gases like formaldehyde come from new furniture, glue and paint, and HEPA does not stop them. Carbon helps with smells, and the Dyson adds a layer meant for formaldehyde. Ask how long that layer lasts before you buy.
Where to Put Each One
The AirDoctor wants open floor space with six inches of room on each side. A plug near the spot helps, and so does a plan for where it will sit, since moving 33 pounds every week gets old. The Dyson can go almost anywhere, as long as it has height. It is tall and thin, and the ring on top needs room to throw air. In a bedroom it can sit by a dresser or at the foot of the bed.
The Fan Question
The Dyson is also a fan, and that is a big part of its pitch. In summer it cools you with a smooth breeze while it cleans. In winter it can run in purifier-only mode, which sends air out of the back so you do not feel it. The catch is that a fan and a purifier have different jobs. A fast breeze helps you feel cool, and a high CADR helps the room get clean. The AirDoctor focuses on the second job, and the Dyson splits its attention.
What Each One Does Best
- AirDoctor wins: airflow, room size, quiet at high speed, and long-term simplicity.
- Dyson wins: looks, weight, app, fan use and fan speeds.
- Both: a HEPA-type filter, a carbon layer and an auto mode with a sensor.
Features
The Dyson has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, an app, an air quality display with color-coded levels, auto mode, a night mode and a remote. It also oscillates and works as a fan. The AirDoctor has auto mode with an air quality sensor, a timer and a quiet jet fan. For app control you need the smart-app AirDoctor.
Cost to Keep Running
The AirDoctor needs a new set of filters each year. The 1-year pack is $374.99. Dyson filters are sold as a set, with prices that vary by model. Check both before you buy, and use the air purifier filter replacement cost guide.
Which Should You Buy?
Buy the AirDoctor for a big room or a home with smoke or pets. Buy the Dyson for a bedroom or office where a fan and a purifier in one makes sense. If price is the point, the Winix 5510 gives a larger rated room for a lot less money. For small spaces, read air purifiers for the bedroom.
FAQ
Which cleans more air, the AirDoctor 5500 or the Dyson TP09?
The AirDoctor, by a wide margin. It handles about 868 square feet at five changes an hour, against about 344 for the Dyson.
Which costs less?
The Dyson TP09 at $499.99, against $999.00 for the AirDoctor AD5500.
Does the Dyson remove formaldehyde?
The listing says it detects and destroys it. Check how long that filter layer lasts.
Is the Dyson also a fan?
Yes. It is a tower fan with a purifier built in.
Final Word
AirDoctor for big rooms. Dyson for style and a built-in fan. Winix if the budget is tight. Simple.
What happens next: expect Dyson to keep rolling out new models, which means older ones get marked down. The TP09 at $499.99 already sits under the newer ones. A big unit like the AirDoctor will not change much, which is the point.
