Midea 22-Pint Dehumidifier Review: Wi-Fi, Noise and Real Coverage

A damp bathroom, a stuffy basement corner, a musty closet. For these jobs, a mid-size dehumidifier is the sweet spot between a weak mini unit and a giant basement beast.

The Midea 22-pint is the one many people land on. It costs $194.99 on Amazon, has a 4.4-star rating from more than 7,100 buyers, is ENERGY STAR certified and works with Wi-Fi apps and voice assistants. It is rated for 1,500 sq ft. Here is how it holds up.

What you get

  • Adjustable humidity from 35 to 85 percent.
  • 47 dBA operation, per the listing.
  • Wi-Fi control through the SmartHome app, plus Alexa and Google Assistant.
  • A built-in drain socket for a standard hose (hose not included).
  • Auto defrost and auto restart after a power cut.
  • Turbo mode and a programmable timer.

Reading the 22-pint number

Since the 2019 DOE test change, pint ratings are lower than before. Midea’s own Cube listing says a 20-pint unit is similar to a 30-pint rating under the 2012 rules. So 22 pints today lands around the old 30-pint class. Good for a damp room or a small basement, not a flooded space. To size one, use our dehumidifier sizing guide.

Midea Cube: the compact alternative

The Midea Cube 20 pint costs $179.99 and is rated for 1,500 sq ft too. Its tank is larger for its size, which means longer runs between empties. Its Amazon rating is 4.0 from about 2,500 buyers, lower than the 22 pint. If you want the better-reviewed model, pick the 22 pint. If space is tight, check the Cube.

Who should buy it

  • Damp bedrooms, bathrooms, offices and small basements.
  • Buyers who want Wi-Fi and voice control.
  • Anyone who wants ENERGY STAR to keep running costs in check.

Bigger or wetter space? Read the basement dehumidifier guide. Hose set up? See dehumidifier with a hose to a sink. And if the machine is not collecting water, check why it is not collecting water.

Where dehumidifiers are heading

Expect apps and humidity logging to become standard, and expect tanks to get bigger as brands compete on convenience. More units will also add built-in pumps, so there is no hose to run.

The trade-off: Wi-Fi features depend on a company app, and apps get retired. Make sure the buttons on the unit do everything, so the machine keeps working if the app does not.

Placement and settings

  • Keep it 6 inches or more from walls so air can flow.
  • Set humidity to 45 or 50 percent. Lower in winter if windows fog.
  • Use the hose socket in damp basements to skip emptying the tank.
  • Clean the filter every couple of weeks.

Running cost

The listing says the unit saves about 31 percent energy compared with traditional dehumidifiers. Actual cost depends on how often it runs. A damp basement may run it most of the day in summer and far less in winter. Check the hygrometer before running it nonstop.

What happens next: expect Wi-Fi dehumidifiers to start sending alerts when the tank is full or humidity is high, and expect makers to add auto-drain pumps. The trade-off is app dependence. A dehumidifier that stops working without an app is a step backward.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 22-pint dehumidifier enough for a basement? For a moderately damp basement up to about 1,000 to 1,500 sq ft, usually. For standing water, go bigger and fix the source.

Can it run with a hose? Yes, there is a drain socket for a standard hose. The hose is not included.

How long until it works? Moderate dampness often improves in a day or two. Heavy moisture can take a week or more.
