AirDoctor 5500 vs Rabbit Air A3: Airflow, Noise and Cost per CFM

Last Updated: October 2026 | Priya Anand
Prices, ratings and specs were checked on Amazon on October 19, 2026. CADR, noise and power numbers come from the older page, the listings and the makers, and were not retested.
Quick Answer: Choose the AirDoctor AD5500 ($999.00) for large rooms and the most airflow. Choose the Rabbit Air A3 SPA-1000N ($759.95) for a quiet, wall-mountable unit with app control. The Medify MA-40 is $212.99 for a lot of airflow at a lower price.

Think of the AirDoctor as a pickup truck and the Rabbit Air as a nice sedan. One hauls twice as much air. The other looks great on a bedroom wall and whispers at night. Both cost real money. Here is how they stack up, and which one deserves your cash.

AirDoctor 5500 vs Rabbit Air A3 at a Glance

The AirDoctor AD5500 is $999.00 on Amazon and the Rabbit Air A3 is $759.95. The AirDoctor is a 33-pound floor tower with 6 fan speeds and a rated CADR of 560 on the older page. The Rabbit Air is a 20-pound unit that can sit on the floor or hang on a wall, with a CADR of 262 on the older page. In plain words, the AirDoctor moves about twice as much air for about $240 more.

What Changed Since the Older Page

The older page used the AirDoctor 5500 at 868 square feet five times an hour and a $300 off offer. Today the AD5500 is listed at 4,172 square feet an hour, which is the same airflow quoted at four changes an hour, and the smart-app version is a separate listing. The Rabbit Air A3 is now sold as the SPA-1000N in several filter versions. Prices were checked on October 19, 2026.

Design and Size

The AirDoctor is built for big, high-ceiling spaces and is 29.75 inches tall and 16 inches square. It has handles and casters, which helps, because it weighs 33 pounds. The Rabbit Air is slim, 20 inches tall and 8 inches deep, and it comes in black, white and custom panels. The ability to hang it on the wall is rare for a purifier this size.

Airflow, Noise and Power

  • Airflow: the AirDoctor handles about 868 square feet at 5 changes an hour. The Rabbit Air handles about 428. See what CADR means.
  • Noise: the AirDoctor runs about 30 to 50 dB. The Rabbit Air runs from 20.3 dBA on low to about 51 dB on high, per the older page.
  • Power: the AirDoctor uses 10 to 100 watts, and the Rabbit Air 5 to 60 watts.

Looking ahead, the split between loud-and-strong and quiet-and-pretty purifiers is not going away. The AirDoctor moves a lot of air and looks like an appliance. The Rabbit Air moves less and looks like a piece of furniture. The catch is that most buyers pay for the look and then run the machine on low.

The Medify MA-40 is the budget curveball. It is listed at a CADR of 406 and cleans 896 square feet in 30 minutes with an H13 HEPA filter. It costs a fraction of the other two. It has a 4.6 rating from nearly 14,000 ratings.

The risk to watch is the filter bill. The AirDoctor 1-year pack is $374.99 on Amazon, and Rabbit Air sells its own filters on top of a $759.95 unit. Both units also have an ion setting that can make a little ozone. Expect more brands to push app subscriptions and branded filters. Add up the price of the first three years before you decide.

Filters and Cost

The AirDoctor uses two pre-filters, two carbon filters and two UltraHEPA filters, and the 1-year pack with 4 carbon and 2 UltraHEPA filters is $374.99. The Rabbit Air uses a pre-filter, a medium filter, carbon, a BioGS HEPA filter and a specialty filter, and its HEPA is listed for 12 months of 24/7 use. At $999.00 for 560 CFM, the AirDoctor costs about $1.78 per CFM. At $759.95 for 262 CFM, the Rabbit Air costs about $2.90. See the air purifier filter replacement cost guide.

How the Filtering Works

Both machines clean in stages. Air first hits a pre-filter that grabs hair, lint and big dust, which protects the finer filters behind it. Next comes carbon, which handles smells and some gases. The last stage is the HEPA-type filter, which traps the tiny particles. The AirDoctor puts its filters on both sides of the unit, so it pulls air in from two sides and sends it out through the top. The Rabbit Air pulls air in through the front cover and also sends it out the top.

The AirDoctor says its UltraHEPA filter traps particles down to 0.003 microns. The Rabbit Air says its BioGS HEPA catches 99.97 percent at 0.3 microns and 99 percent at 0.1 microns. Both are far below the size of pollen, dander and dust. Viruses are smaller still, but a filter only traps them when they ride on bigger droplets or dust. It does not kill them.

One more tip: leave breathing room. A purifier next to a wall or couch has to fight to pull air in. A foot or so of clear space on each side lets it work.

Smart Features

The Rabbit Air has an app, a filter tracker, a mood light and an air quality sensor. The AirDoctor has auto mode with a sensor, and a separate smart-app version for extra money. The Rabbit Air is the better fit for people who want app control built in.

Ions and Ozone

Both units have an ion generator. Ions can make small amounts of ozone, which is a lung irritant. If the unit lets you turn the ions off, do it.

Which Should You Buy?

Buy the AirDoctor for a big room, an open plan or a home with smoke and pets. Buy the Rabbit Air for a bedroom or nursery where quiet and looks matter. If neither price feels right, the Medify MA-40 is a cheap way to get a similar level of airflow. For more bedroom help, read air purifiers for the bedroom.

FAQ

Which is stronger, the AirDoctor 5500 or the Rabbit Air A3?

The AirDoctor, at a rated CADR of 560 against 262 on the older page.

Which is quieter?

The Rabbit Air, at 20.3 dBA on low. The AirDoctor runs about 30 to 50 dB.

Can the Rabbit Air A3 be wall mounted?

Final Word

Big and strong: AirDoctor. Quiet and neat: Rabbit Air. Want most of the airflow for a lot less? Medify MA-40. Pick your lane.

What happens next: expect both to lean harder on apps and tracking tags that tell you when a filter is done. That is helpful, as long as the app keeps working in five years.
