Klein Tools CL220 Review: $70 Clamp Meter, What It Does and Misses

The Klein Tools CL220 is a clamp meter that costs less than a nice dinner for two. It is also the one tool that tells a homeowner whether an air conditioner is pulling too much power, without touching a single wire inside.

Amazon lists the CL220 at $69.97 with 4.7 stars from 1,182 ratings. That is a lot of buyers happy with a basic tool. It is also missing one feature that HVAC work often needs. Here is what it does, what it skips, and who should spend a bit more.

What it does well

  • Measures AC current by clamping around one wire, up to 400 amps.
  • Reads AC and DC voltage, resistance and continuity through the test leads.
  • Measures temperature with a thermocouple.
  • Has a non-contact voltage tester built into the clamp jaw.
  • Uses auto-ranging and TRMS, so readings stay steady on the kind of power an HVAC motor makes.
  • Has a backlit display and a holder on the side for the test leads.

Looking ahead, expect clamp meters to add Bluetooth logging and phone apps, even at this price. The catch is that more features mean a fussier tool. For most homeowners, a simple backlit clamp that reads fast is still the better buy.

What it does not list

The CL220 listing does not mention capacitance. That matters because a weak run capacitor is one of the most common reasons an air conditioner fan or compressor struggles. To test a capacitor, a clamp meter needs a capacitance mode. The CL320 in the CL320KIT has it, and so does the Klein MM420 multimeter covered in our HVAC multimeter picks.

The CL220 also reads AC current only through the clamp. That is fine for motors and compressors, which run on AC. It is not the tool for DC current.

CL220 or CL220VP kit?

Klein also sells the CL220VP kit at $99.98, rated 4.6 stars from 68 buyers. It adds a dual-range non-contact voltage tester with a flashlight and a small voltage tester. If a voltage tester is not already in the toolbox, the extra $30 is fair.

Reading the spec sheet

  • TRMS: reads uneven, motor-type power correctly.
  • Auto-ranging: picks the right scale for you.
  • Non-contact voltage: a quick check for live wires before you touch anything.
  • 400A AC: far more than a home AC ever draws.

What happens next: expect Klein and rivals to keep adding capacitance and Bluetooth to cheaper models. If that arrives at the CL220 price, it will make the choice between a clamp and a multimeter much simpler.

Safety basics

  • Turn the power off at the breaker before opening any panel, then confirm it is off.
  • Check the meter’s CAT rating. The CL220VP listing shows CAT III 600V.
  • Capacitors can hold a charge after power is off. Discharge them the way the equipment manual says.
  • If a job feels over your head, call a licensed technician.

Who should buy it

  • Homeowners who want to check fan, blower and compressor current before calling a pro.
  • Renters and DIYers with basic electrical jobs.
  • Anyone who wants a reliable clamp for around $70.

Not sure what to check first? Start with central air not cooling and our HVAC gauge picks.

A simple way to use it on an AC

  • With the power on, clamp around one wire feeding the condenser fan or compressor.
  • Compare the reading with the amp rating printed on the unit’s data plate.
  • A reading far above the rating points to a motor, capacitor or airflow problem.
  • A reading of zero when the unit should run points to a power or control issue.

That check takes two minutes and tells you whether to change a filter, clean the coil or call a technician. It is also a good way to describe a problem on the phone: instead of saying the unit is acting weird, read the numbers.

What to buy if the CL220 is not enough

For capacitor testing, look at the Klein CL320KIT at $114.99. For a pure multimeter, the Klein MM420 at $64.69 is covered in our HVAC multimeter guide. The UEI DL389B at $177.57 is another dual-display clamp for heavier use.

One more thing to expect: counterfeit and look-alike meters show up on marketplaces. Buy from a seller you trust, check the model number on the box, and be wary of any CAT-rated meter that is far cheaper than the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can the CL220 test a capacitor? The listing does not show a capacitance mode, so choose the CL320KIT or a multimeter with capacitance for that job.

Is it good for HVAC work? Yes, for current, voltage, resistance, continuity and temperature. Add a capacitance tool if you plan to test capacitors.

Does it measure DC current? The clamp reads AC current. DC voltage is measured through the leads.
